Apocalypse Hollywood: Survival Lessons From the Stars
The dead have risen and you need to make a fast choice; run for the mall, where you'll be spotted, but there are food, guns and shelter, or go hide in the country, picking off zombies one by one. What do you do? At Popular Mechanics, we take survival seriously. If you're caught in a disaster, lost in the wilderness or living far from civilization, we have tips, advice and even a menu for you. Hollywood's lessons tend to involve bold uses of strange weaponry, star-studded heroics and sideways strategies to get out of bizarre scenarios. Hollywood doesn't always excel at realism, but, hey, if you're ever caught in a post-apocalyptic nuclear fallout crawling with zombies or run by apes, you'll thank your lucky stars you read the lessons here.
The Scenario /// Both the 1978 original and the Zack Snyder–directed remake offer the same basic premise: The zombies are coming, so a group of survivors takes refuge in a shopping mall, with its endless supply of food, flat screens and a modern security system.
The Scene /// Camping out in a shopping mall never quite pans out into the childhood fantasy we all imagine it would be. Either because of a sense of social duty, a shortage of supplies or hopes of finding their fellow man, the survivors in both films are forced to eventually leave their sanctuary for the danger of the great zombie-infested unknown.
The Lesson /// Always come prepared with an escape route. If there's a crisis, your luxury-packed bomb shelter may keep you safe and happy for awhile, but eventually you'll have to leave. And when you do, you'll want to make sure you have a clear route to safety.
