2008 Cadillac CTS Test Drive: Serious American Contender

Browse expert reviews and compare info on the Cadillac CTS at the buyers guide button

This is the sedan we’ve been waiting for from Cadillac—a perfectly proportioned design wrapped around a world-class rear-drive chassis. Caddy can now stand proud with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The new CTS is wider and slightly longer than before and rides on a choice of three suspensions.

We prefer the firmest grade, FE3, which offers quicker steering and thicker rollbars. The ride is sure-footed, stable and remarkably poised at the limit. Yet it’s never harsh. A 263-hp 3.6-liter V6 is standard. But we’d choose the optional direct-fuel-injected version with 304 hp. It really cooks. The six-speed auto allows rev-matching downshifts and is better suited to this car than the manual is.

Inside, it’s roomy and luxurious. The only real downsides are its 2-ton heft and lack of a V8. But a fix for that last shortfall is coming in ’09. —Ben Stewart
