2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive

Compare the Grand Caravan with three cars at the buyers guide button

Since it invented the genre in 1983, Chrysler has been the undisputed sales champions of the minivan. And if the all-new designs of its latest minivan lineup is any indication (we first saw these models January), the recently bought-out Chrysler Group has isn’t willing to give up that title anytime soon. In fact, it’s looking to expand its lead over the rest of the pack.

The fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country offer the same basic chassis layout as last year, and still feature front-wheel drive, automatic transmission and beam rear axle. On the roadways near San Diego, the new vans felt more stable and solid, with lower noise levels. But you can find improvements throughout, from the choice of three V6 engines to second-row captain’s chairs that rotate 180 degrees and third-row seats with power folding options. All that, on top of both 2008 vans riding a full 6 in. wider at the roofline and 2 in. longer than past models, and you’ve got a kind of rec room on wheels.

That Swivel ‘n Go seating is the standout interior feature, with a storable table fitting between the second and third rows so families can play games, eat lunch or just sit and chat—a minivan turned minimotorhome. But there’s a rear-seat entertainment option, too: Three video monitors (one for each row), can handle streaming television, care of SIRIUS, and DVDs.
A novel center console also holds a variety of storage pockets and four cup holders, sliding fore and aft a full 21 in. so you can open a soda bottle in the front seat and slide it to passengers in the back.

Are those amenities important? You bet. On a daylong family road trip with three adults and two young boys aboard, we quickly discovered the difference between entertained kids and bored ones. Without the video screens, the boys acted like boys (i.e. a lot of punching and roughhousing). With the two separate TV screens, the rear of the van was dead silent—an amazing transformation.

Dodge models come in two flavors: Grand Caravan SE and SXT. Chrysler offers the Town & Country in LX, Touring and Limited. The short wheelbase minivan is no longer available, and a workman-class, two-seat Dodge Caravan utility van is the price leader. Prices for the Grand Caravan SE start at $22,470, while the Town & Country LX has a $23,190 base MSRP. —Jim Dunne

17. Town and Country clanging - call 800-992-1997 to complain!
We also have a problem with the "clanging" that the T & C makes after being shut off. I got into an argument with the service mgr of our dealership yesterday when I was told "that's normal for this car and a lot of cars." I couldn't believe my ears, this sound is not normal for any car and I asked him if Chrysler was planning to sell T & C's next year with the same obnoxious noise. People you shuttle around town with or friends all look at the car like it's a piece of junk. The fact that Chrysler seems to not want to fix this problem is outrageous and everyone who has this issue should SPEAK UP! This is an otherwise great car but the noise is embarrassing and annoying. Call Chrysler's service center at 1-800-992-1997 to file your complaint!

Just to add to the frustration...my 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan makes the same annoying pinging noise described in 13, 14 and 15. On a daily basis complete strangers tell me there is something wrong with my vehicle. Although Dealer says it's normal, I find it a terrible annoyance on an otherwise great vehicle :(

15. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
my 2008 chrysler t&c is also making the pinging sound when running and after shut off just as reader comment #13 stated. I went in to macy's today for one thing and came out & it was still pinging, at least 5 minutes...have you had it corrected reader comment#13? I only have my van for 2 weeks & had it in once and they could not verify the noise

14. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
my 2008 town and country also makes a loud pinging almost clanging noise when runinning and cooling down it is much worse. The dealer service rep said this is a normal sound for the vehicle. It is a disgrace for a new vehicle.

13. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
My 2008 town and country has a loud pinging noise in the exhaust while running and while the engine is cooling. It can be heard across the parking lot.

I wonder why everyone thinks a mini van should look like a crossover. I hvae liked vans since my old VW Bus. This new style leaves me cold. I am shopping for a new or newer van and like the 2007 looks better.

11. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
I still own a 1996 Dodge Gran Caravan with nearly 195k miles on it and after looking at SUVs and Crossovers, I think the Dodge Grand Caravan might be better for me. Hopefully the new 4.0 V6 lives up to its promise.

Traded our 2006 Chrysler minivan for a 2008 for the lifetime warranty. The transmission scrambled at 2000 miles! May have been bad to start with but I'm not very happy with that. Other then that nice ride.

9. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
I had two Dodge Caravans, a 1998 and a 2003. Now we bought a 2008 grand caravan SXT. This car is very comfortable and better than Honda and Toyota.

8. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
I am thinking new car . Thinking Mini van . Short wheelbase . All of a sudden . Not available .?? Lifetime warrantee ? They have stiffed me on 2 top line dodges with a 3 year / 36000 mile mile bumper to bumper warantee that covers nothing . Not sure what next car will be . Someone will have to do a h--- of a selling job .

7. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
I have a 2004 Grand Caravan and minivans are the best family vehicle ever! Does anyone believe that KIA with their low reliability will challenge Chrysler in minivans? I prefer my van to not leave my family on the side of the road as a freind's KIA did.

You are targeting the wrong audience. Most retirees don't mind paying for beds when traveling, but as a retiree, I would love to use a van with these features. Most parks offer restrooms and drinking fountains, but many of us prefer to bring our breakfast or lunch. In the cooler months being able to sit inside to eat is a convenience. Check the parks after Sep 1 when school starts. Retirees who don't want the expense of a large travel trailer or motorhome should be your market. (I have a '99 Grand Caravan and a 1972 Dodge Motorhome...Mobil Travler). Am shopping for a replacement.

I have a 2008 Town & Country - I love it, but it hurts my neck when I drive it. The head rests are NOT comfortable.

4. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
Lets see, very expensive gas, so let's make them even bigger. These "grand" versions were like driving a bus before, I can't imagine what these are like now. No short version, then no Chrysler in my future. I want something that fits in my garage. There are a lot of people out there that want a van but not these behemoths. Bring back the short version.

3. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
The Town & Country swivel seating is great for the deaf. No more neck straining trying to sign (talk) between passengers in 2nd and 3rd rows!

2. RE: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country: Test Drive
I don't get it. The "new" caravan looks just like the one my parents bought back in 1985. It looks like the took the 1989 model and just freshened it up a bit. I get this strategy when it comes to iconic cars like Mustangs/Camaros/Challengers, but a "Classic Dodge Caravan"?? I'm not buying it.

I think the new minivans from Chrysler look great! However, I question whether they can maintain their marketshare lead by discontinuing the short wheelbase model. Kia is now going to take that market and pose an overall long term challenge to Chrysler supremacy in this area.
