2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report

DETROIT — I’ve seen so-called “facelifts” for cars, but none in recent memory is so skimpy as Ford’s update on the Crown Victoria for 2008. Call it the Crown Victoria Special Edition—at least that’s what the escutcheon says on the front fender (pictured at right). The ID logo also offers a simple crown image, just in case you missed the message.

We don’t know about the technical details—if there are any—but we think that the three-bar grille insert does wonders for the front-end appearance. Actually, it looks like Ford designers simply drew up a new three-bar insert and popped it into the grille opening of a current model. Also note the bright covering on the center section of the lower fascia: It’s not much, but it adds some much-needed glitz to the front-end. As we’ve said, we’ve seen skimpy facelifts before, but this one could win the prize for least extensive. Least expensive, too? We shall see. —Jim Dunne

8. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
If Gm can get 20 mpg out of a Tahoe Hybrid then Ford can get 30 MPG out of the Vic Hybrid and save the real American sedan as in more than 210" long. GM could do the same and import the Caprice it uses the same old small block as the Tahoe so why wouldn't the Hybrid equipment fit and how about a Turbo Direct Injection Diesel Hybrid. There are a lot of ways to save real American V8 car's from CAFE the technology would even work pony cars.Long Live the Crown Vic and if Gm finally imports the Caprice name it Caprice Impala name was ruined by the current mini Rent a Pala

best car in world 4.6 v8 its great

6. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
Ford did this to a car that became fleet only for 2008 because, the police still need something to drive and the fleet business still love it so it's still in demand and it, like anything else, needs to be updated. However, obvious reasons aside, the Special Edition is sadly only available in the Middle East. They still get full load Crown Vics/Grand Marquis and Town Cars. The Crown Vics and Grand Marquis even have dual exhaust standard and the LSE option is still available there for the G Marquis and the Sport is still available for the Crown Vic as is a new S package. They are sold as normal cars there. Does this piss you off, yes it does. Just like how the Middle East gets Chevrolet Caprices (like the Caprice SS) and the Lumina SS (not to mention a CR8 hi perf package) from Australia's Holden. The sad reality is that Ford, Chrysler and GM have to abide by the EPA's CAFE requirements and Ford sells far too many Mustang cars and need to offset those guzzlers with economical cars and unlike GM, they only have very few cars to do that with and the few they have don't sell very well with exception to the Fusion which sells well for now. Unless the Fusion gets a decent hybrid package that beats the Malibu's, there can be no Crown Vic. The Gr Marquis may be next. What they should do is beat the bullet where it comes from and make all the cars with hybrids incluiding the Crown Vic. I have no problem cruising in a hybrid Crown Vic. There also needs to be more products that sell to offset the guzzlers. My quesion is, how come BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc don't have to abide by the CAFE?

5. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
Are you sure some kid in Dearborn isn't having fun with your 'spy camera' people? That's nothing more than the Fusion/Taurus 3-bar grille inset into a CVPI grille and a bit of sticky chrome stuff on the lower part of the airdam. I'd say that the joke's on PM here.

4. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
Looks great.Plan on putting the grille on my 05 to make it look newer

3. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
I know a lot of people hatte this car. But I think if they lowered the weight a litle with more use of aluminum and put in the Mustang V8 with the 6 spped tranny from the new Taurus and increased the sound deadening like in the new Taurus they would have a pretty decent modern rear driver. Throw in the front buckets from the Volvo S80 and people might pay 30 grand for it.

2. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
Are you sure that this is an actual Ford Grill and not some one off grill that a very dedicated Crown Victoria owner had made for him? Why would Ford spend the time and money on a car that, for 2008, became a "fleet only" model?

1. RE: 2008 Crown Victoria Special Edition: Spy Report
Looks great.Plan on putting the grille on my 05 to make it look newer. I Love the Crown Victoria and have owned nothing but Crown Victorias my entire life.I can put on over 200k miles on the Crown Vic with no worry in Maimi jungle heat.I can't picture myself driving something else. Long Live the Crown Vic.
