2008 Scion xB: Test Drive

LOS ANGELES — So how exactly do you remodel an icon? Well, if you’re Scion, you go big. The all-new Scion xB is certainly reminiscent of the original, only a little smoother around the corners—and much larger. The wheelbase is up 4 in., it’s wider by nearly 3 in. and, overall, it’s a full foot longer. That translates into a much roomier interior. The xB now feels substantial, like a car from the next class up. Downside? It’s gained almost 700 lbs. in the process. Woof.

Engineers added more insulation and sound deadening material to make the xB a quieter box, and it worked: The new car is very refined for its bargain-basement $16,600 price tag.

The chassis is all new and comes from the recently introduced Auris, a Toyota model from Europe. MacPherson struts upfront and a beam axle in the rear continue to handle suspension duties, but the new xB gets four-wheel disc brakes standard for the first time.

A short drive around town here proved the new xB rides smoothly and quietly. Not that the new Scion would be our first choice for canyon carving: Remember, it’s a tall, softly sprung and, now, heavy box. The xB certainly doesn’t have the taut suspension and sporty soul of, say, a Honda Fit. But your local Scion dealership will remain happy to sell you a lower, sportier suspension, giant wheels and tires and any number of performance and cosmetic accessories, including a supercharger. After all, customization is the Scion way.

Under the hood is the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder from the Scion tC and the Toyota Camry. Here it makes 158 hp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque and comes paired to a five-speed manual or a new sequential shift, four-speed automatic. So the Scion xB can keep up with the majority of the cars on the road—finally. It’s certainly no rocket, but neither are any of the other cars you can get for under $18,000. Still, we were surprised to see the estimated mileage ratings of 22 in the city and 28 on the highway. Shouldn’t a four-cylinder car like this return mileage at least in the low 30s?

Overall, though, the new xB is a larger, more refined package at the same bargain price. And that certainly appeals to us. But will it appeal to the young, hip 20-something buyers that Scion won over the first time? We’ll see. —Ben Stewart

I haven't bought it yet but I am so buying one this summer (the campany I work for is moving 20 miles away and need a commuter). I did some comparison with similar vehicles (just Japanese cars) and found that xB is cheap considering all the standard features it comes with, including 2.4L engine.

115. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Owned a 2005 xB. Now own a 2008 xB. Toyota fixed everything that was wrong with the first gen - more power, less tinny, smoother, more substantial car. And it's already been said, but I'll say it again - the EPA estimates for the first gen xB were a complete joke. I never got better than 28mpg in that anemic little 'econo'-box, and that was 100% highway driving like a grandma. I just clocked 26mpg in the 2008, and that's 50/50 city/highway, spirited driving.

114. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just bought a 2008 XB. I am 6'6.5" Tall and 390lbs. I am by no means a little feller. I have always bought Mopars and while looking for a new vehicle made a good mistake of sitting in a 2008 Scion XB. It has much more room then a Dodge Calibur, PT Cruiser, Dodge Caravan, any Jeep Product, the Dodge Journey, Nitro, and the Pacifica. I bleed Mopar Blood, and I am sure my Grandfather is rolling in his grave, but I had to buy what I could get into and feel comfortable in. I highly recommend the XB to anyone. I am averaging 29mpg and it isn't even broke in yet.

113. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
2008 scion xb, 30 mpg average. Plenty of room and sporty ride.

112. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
It's hilarious what varied and different vehicles people come from/were shopping for before buying this. My wife and I wanted something that could hold the soon to be 4 person family, and were seriously trying to make a choice that was good for the environment (to balance out her Jetta GLI and my Ducati). Plus it was going to have to haul the motorcycle on a trailer and have lots of cargo room, since I was going to trade my 4x4 Tacoma. We went to the Toyota/Scion dealer with the intent of checking out the Prius and the Highlander Hybrid. I wasn't super psyched about the Highlander since it still gets crappy gas mileage and costs damn near $40K, and the minute I sat in the Prius I realized I could never buy one. I'm 6'4 and my head hit the roof and the rear view mirror was smack dab in the middle of my field of view (where other cars are when you're driving) :(. Fortunately our salesman said..check this one out. I couldn't believe the value once we drove it. Space? check. Standard safety features and 'basic necessity luxury features' (power locks, decent stereo) check. Fun to drive? check. Amazing fit and finish for a car in this price range? check (the doors close with the feel of a much more expensive luxury car). Anyway, I did just what the salesman said Scion wants folks to do--went crazy with upgrades (cold air intake, TRD muffler, lowering springs, 17" wheels) so it wasn't insanely cheap, but even so there's nothing on the market that I found, that has the combination of features, space, coolness and is as fun to drive for 21K. I'm super happy so far. Great car

111. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My only concern was the gas mileage- honestly though, all other good stuff about my XB overrides that. Nice size, quiet and just plain fun to drive and ugly enough to be different. I test drove the older models and found them a little less than substantial- so the size and power increases are a reasonable trade off for the gas mileage loss in my opinion.

110. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just had to put my two cents worth in here. I have never owned an older XB however to compare, I have had an 08 with auto trans for 5 months now and 8000 miles later I am thrilled with this car. I noticed a large mpg increase after 5000 miles. I average 30 mpg all around and have actually seen 41.8 for a 100 mile stretch at 65 miles per hour.(per the onboard computer) I am 65 years old and have driven police cars most of my life and this little car has lots of power. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

109. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Have had my 2008 Scion XB since 5/2007 and love it. I have installed a TRD air cleaner and taken the stock air-inlet hose away from the top of the motor and placed it down behind the left accent piece on the air dam. I removed that insert and cut the bottom portion off. Installation of a screen to keep large debris out...and behold the poor man's cold air intake. I now AVERAGE 31.5 w/ a/c on. If I drive it enthusiastically 30.4. No lower. I've also installed a lower profile tire up front to eliminate tire roll-over and get rid of front end push associated w/ this vehicle. It rocks. Next will be a strut-bar.

108. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
We Bought Our '08 Xb In August '07 And As Of April 2nd '08 We Have 20K Miles On It. My Complaints Are As Follows: 1) Seats Are TOO HARD And No Front Thigh Support. My '96 Hyundai Has More Comfortable Seats! Needs A Larger Fuel Tank Or Better MPG 120 Miles @ 80MPH And Its Ready For A Refill. Front Brakes Squeak. Otherwise Great, Quick And Roomy!!

107. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I've always liked the traditional styling of the xB, it took rising gas prices, a test drive and a look at the sticker price to convince my husband that it is a good-looking vehicle. At close to $4 gallon, our Infinite QX and Jeep Liberty Renegade was killing us in gas costs- my husband has a lengthy communte. We were going to trade in the Jeep but decided we would regret loosing the ruggedness and towing capacity so we opted to keep the Jeep for recreational purposes. We certainly weren't going to give up the luxury of the Infinity so we figured a good portion of the monthly payment would be made up in the amount of money we would save in gas-We fill up our tank 2 X week @ $70+ and it has been reduced to only filling up once a week. That adds up quick and I feel a little better that we're doing our part to help the environment. My husband is tall and says there is plenty of leg room (which is a biggie for him). Our teenage daughtre says we bought a "young car", whatever that means (we're in our early 40'2). I LOVE the iPod charger/input and the fact that my father-in-law can easily climb into the back seat with plenty of legroom and storage space to haul "stuff".

106. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Just bought my silver '08 XB.....LOVE IT!!! Hubby was concerned it would be too small...he is 6'2"...he can put the drivers seat all the way back, and still fit comfortably in the back seat...I would recommend this vehicle for sure! IT ROCKS!

105. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just purchased a 2008 xB dark blue with remote start and alarm. I love the car but my wife isn't crazy about it until she saw how good it was on fuel compared to our Honda Pilot. Although it's like apples and oranges the Scion does 80% of whatever the piolot does for under 20 grand! not too shabby. I don't mind departing from the Jone's as they fill up there gas guzzeling SUVees at $4. a gallon this summer.

104. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just got the 08 xB RS5 Gold and it's awesome. At first I was thinking of getting a Yaris but I'm glad I didn't. It's roomy, runs fast, looks good and unique, and not too boxy. One of my friends has the Gen 1 and this one is a far better car hands down. The people who have a Gen 1 and say negative stuff should test drive one :)

103. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The new XB is a great car particularly when you consider the price. I love driving it. My gas mileage has been around 26MPG with mostly highway and interstate driving at 60MPH+.

102. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I KNOW THE XB IS SUPPOSED TO ATTRACT THE YOUNG BUYERS. IM 58 AT MY AGE YOU WANT A CAR THATS COMFORTABLE AND EASY TO GET IN AN OUT OF. IM A BIG GUY AND THERES LOTS OF ROOM BETWEEN ME AN THE STEERING WHEEL. ID RECOMEND TO THIS CAR TO ANYONE.

101. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
NEW XB BLACK CHERRY LOVE THE CAR. GOT THE PIONEER UPGRADE STEREO LOVE THAT TOO IM CHECKING PRICES ON SUNROOFS THATS JUST A MUST FOR ANY CAR I OWN. JUST GREAT CAR SO FAR 200 MI LOVE IT!!!!

100. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
BOUGHT MY X-B A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AND AFTER BEING A LITTLE SCARED ABOUT THE POOR MILEAGE DURING THE FIRST 100 MI, NOW BELIEVE THAT I MAY HAVE PURCHASED THE "BEST-KEPT SECRET" OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY. I'M 64 YEARS OLD AND HAVE OWNED 30 CARS, SOME OF WHICH I HAVE PUT ALMOST 300,000 MI ON. I CAME FROM AN AUDI ALLROAD AND AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE X-B.

99. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My wife and I were looking for a car that had plenty of room and the seats were not a foot off the ground. We were looked at the 2008 xB and I thought the car was strange looking. I got in the car without a problem. Ditto with my wife. My wife said the loved it. She said it looked like a gangsta caa. (WE're from the Boston erea)We ordered one. Got leather seats a bunch more extras bringing the price up over 22K. Now we both love it. Its a really fun car to drive. We a not kids, I'm in my 70's and my wife is close behind.

98. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
#57 - 2 seconds is a pretty big improvement 0-60. #96 - At 90 mph the old xB is going to be SO inefficient becaue of the gearing (a necessity of the smaller engine), making the MPG difference between the two models much less. Bottom line: do your homework, compare stock features, interior and cargo room, price and mpg. Then, drive it; you'll buy it. I'm going to.

97. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
#64 & #65 are nuts - I am 6'6" 260 pounds, and fit in my '08 just fine. 3" clearance above my head, plenty of leg room for my 37" inseam, and more shoulder room than the Gen1 or the HHR (ugh). Oh, and averaging 30 mpg in mostly 75mph highway driving (and about to put in Amsoil for more mpg). What's not to like? Buy one!

96. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I own a 2004 xb and a 2008 xb The 2004 is a much car for the price Sure it looks funny but the mileage is far superior . The old one will cruise all day at 90 and still get good mileage where as the new one you can watch the gas go down while crusing in town

95. Switched from BMW 330cic to Scion xB
I'm 30, just had my first son and needed to go from my 2005 BMW 330cic. I wasn't too convinved about the Scion xB because I wasn't a big fan of the previous years models. Once I sat in the xB that's when i changed my mind. With a new born i couldn';t justify blowing 52k on a car whose sole purpose is to get me from A to B with some fun in the middle. Scion xB does that and more. BTW, get the manual its more fun to drive.. now i'm ready to start customizing this car to bump the sound up a notch. So far averaging 24mpg. (still in break-in period though, should go up after).

94. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Love the car. It rocks. Safe, reliable and price is great for all the features.

93. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Bought an xA in May. Wife likes the automatic around town. But, it's not suited for the up-and-down hills of my daily commute. Waited for an xB with a stick, and am not sorry. With the new 2.4 Litre motor, I can go "over the hill" in 5th gear! Handles better on the curves than any of my 14 classic Fords. 28 mpg. Happy.

92. 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My Father pitched this car to me. I took one look laughed and said "No Way!" I thought this car was ugly as sin. He showed me the new more rounded design and took me over to try one. I am telling you people try it! The ride sold me. I have stoped looking at all other options and am picking up one of these babies next week. I Camp a lot and need room to pack a cooler, grill, tents, carport, chairs, personal items as well as other people and their stuff. This car has room for it all. I can't believe it. The ride was great. Took it threw town and on 95. I was looking hard for blind spots and with mirrors adjusted I had no problems seeing all around me. I merged left and right no issues. My only concern at all with this car is the reverse light. I don't think I have a problem with seeing behind me I am just worried that non xB owners will have a hard time know that I am in fact backing up. Not sure who thought that one up but everything else is top notch and you can't beat the price for the car you are getting. I understand you nostalgic naysayers but really just restore an old VW and leave the rest of the drivers looking for a reall 2008 alone. Anyone looking do not take this off the table until you at least drive one once.

91. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I was about to buy a 2008 Matrix but found that none available had ABS brakes--would have to order to get ABS. When I said if I order one, I'd order a manual transmission also -I like "real driving", with a stick. The salesman brought up the Scion XB and started listing the standard safety features like ABS, vehicle stability control, traction control, front-back side curtain airbags, all standard for $16,270 . . at first I was reluctant about the exterior look, but he was 100% right in saying, "if you like driving a stick and you want a sporty driving feel, don't get in it unless you'd consider buying one, because if you drive it, you'll WANT it". That is exactly what happened. WOW! I drove it for about 10 minutes and said, "I don't know why I should look at anything else" and I bought one in silver, with manual trans. The XB has loads of power in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear, the steering is sporty, and it corners and hugs the curves like I can't believe. The Vehicle Stability Control makes for absolutely no tilt or sway when rounding the curves of expressway exit ramps - it is awesome in that regard. I owned a BMW X-5 and sold it to cut my car expenses, and I can tell you this Scion 2008 XB drives a LOT like the 2005 BMW X-5 did. BTW, my husband thought I was nuts when I told him what I bought . . said the exterior was odd and unattractive, and was not impressed at all with the idea . . until he drove it. He drove 2 blocks and said, "WOW, I'm convinced ...I see why you bought it! The power and handling are great, the dash etc. are sporty, cool looking . . " This is from a very happy VW Passat owner. He is extremely impressed with the XB, especially for the price and fuel economy. I got a whole lot more for the money than if I'd bought a Matrix. The XB is really fun to drive, and lots of people ask about it - it seems to have "intrigue" for a lot of different age groups. It's very practical- seating height is great for those of us who are 50-ish and it's getting harder to get out of lower-sitting cars. The XB is "step-in" easy.

90. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I'm almost 50 and can see how the new xB will be very popular with the older retired crowd. Low price, lots of room, easy to step into and out of, and comfortable drive. I especially like how you can get in and out of the back seat without climbing or crawling (like other small cars). The negatives, one of this I noticed when I sat inside is the large blindspot. What's with this? It means more accidennts when merging to the right, and that might not be good for geriatric folks with lower peripheral vision and slower reflexes. The other negative I can see is the single backup light. Maybe someone from the design studio thought it was cool, but it doesn't illuminate well enough for you to backup in the dark, and with the blindspots you'd likely hit a pole or some other car. If they fixed the visibility issues, added lumbar support, I'd say this is a hit with the largest growing age group, the baby boomers! As it turns out I opted for the xD, since I already have a Sienna for hauling people and stuff around.

89. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Just bought the Xb and have looked at the past several year's models too. I don't understand the negative marketing comments, as it only makes sense that at least one of the Scion models be targeting someone who is an impractical Gen Y hipster. HOORAH that there is actually a vehicle that resembles (although still a bit smaller) these new "crossover" vehicles that are certainly not crossover priced. The Xb is extremely funtional at a great price and will target a much larger audience now that it isn't such an odd looking box/aerodynamic nightmare. Kudos to Scion - I like all the improvements. Much better deal than Matrix, Vibe and far roomier than the Fit.

88. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I absolutely love this car, it's amazing, funky, and a pleasure to drive. I liked the old xB, but this one is even better. Nice job scion!

87. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
When my old car started having problems I started shopping around for a new car. Initially I had settled on getting a Toyota Matrix. However when I went to the dealership I spotted the new 08 XB and said "what's that?!" I love the new design. It's much more elegant looking than the old box. I test drove one and I was sold. For it's pricing it was a better deal and more room than the matrix. I've had the XB for nearly 2 months and I still get a thrill out of driving it. It's a fun car and so comfortable!

86. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just began commuting 150 miles a day. My Ford Explorer was eating a hole in my pocket. I went to the local Toyota dealer looking for economy cars with my wife. I'm 6'2" and 250lbs, so needless to say when I drove the Scion X-D I enjoyed it, but it was a bit confining. My wife pointed out the X-B and I was hesitant at first, but once I got in and drove it I was sold. Great car! The cas milage is a big step up for me and I can travel in comfort and in style. This is not just a kids car. I'm 45 and I can still deliver my fair share of hip, slick, and cool.

85. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The Scion XB is the car I have been waiting for! I am 74 yrs old and appreciate every feature of my new '08!AQR

84. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
We test drove the 2004 xB when it was new and we loved it for all of the obvious reasons, but the deal-breaker was the lack of book bag & band instrument room behind the rear seats. When I first saw an '08, it was in traffic and I immediately recognized it as a new design of the xB. I like both generations, but I like the snarlier look of the '08. I drove a Suzuki Samurai for 5 years, and in Maryland,"cute/novel" vehicles don't get much respect on the road-tailgating & close passing prevail among other forms of disrespect. Although the '08 still turns heads and get positive reactions, it has a little more muscle keep up with (or get away from) mainstream traffic. Regardless of how positive or negative the changes are viewed, it's still a cool car, as practical as it is novel, still an amazing bargain for the standard equipment and it has that Toyota quality.

83. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I own an 06. Love it!! Is it perfect, no but it serves my needs 95% of the time. The new one looks too much like the PT loser and what's up with the one reverse light. Did Toyota forget what brought these consumers in the first place?

82. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just bought a new XB, 08. I loved it. My wife was going to keep my truck "Frontier 4 doors "and I keep the XB. After she drove it, she took my keys for the XB. She said to me "I never knew this car was so spacious from inside, the way it rides is just Phenomenom, and forget about the stereo system" She loves it. Now we ended up sharing it since it is more economical that the truck. I am keeping the truck- Winter in Jersey sometimes could be ugly- One thing Scion needs to add is an arm resting for the passenger side. If you are thinking to buy one I recommend you test drive one. You will love it!!!!!!Regards, Dave

81. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My wife an i were recently looking for a new car. We went to the toyota dealership and were looking at theyre SUV's and my wife thought she was gonna be mean to me and ask me to test drive the xB. I was so against driving this hideous thing. Well long story short. We drove it and WOW! I couldnt believe it. You know that saying dont judge a book by its cover... Well same goes for a car. We loved the car so much we ordered one as soon as we got back to the dealer...

80. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Just brought my silver 2008 XB,in for the warranty covered 5000 mile service, oil change and tire rotation and some other stuff. It has about 5,500 miles on it now no problems so far. Winter is just around the corner here in New England. This will be the true test of how it handles in snow and ice. The stability control I think may have saved my life twice now with some crazy driving on 95 coming back from the Boston area when people decided to go from 80 mph to 0 in about 10 feet!!!

79. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Two weeks ago I was at the car wash with my 06 Tacoma pickup, and saw an older model xB getting the interior cleaned. I looked inside and was amazed at the size and volume of the interior. I realized in that moment that I really did not need a truck that only seats 2, and gets about 18 mpg on average for the utility it offers. I can get an xB. By the end of the week the truck was gone and now I have the 08 xB, and I love it. I must say however that I like to older model too. It reminded me of the VW Busses I used to drive. Peace.

78. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I have a 2008 Blackberry Crush XB, and I LOVE this car! My frined who owns the original XB loves his MPG, but he admits he envies everything else on my second gen XB. Good power, roomy, and an eye catching vehicle. I'm averaging 26MPG by the way.

77. RE: 2008 Scion xB
Bought a silver 2008 xB last week. Love it. With the back seat down, there's more than enough room for my two big retrievers and me to get around town. I live in FL and even on a really hot day the air conditioner blasts icy cold air within a minute or two. I really believe it is well worth the price. Can't believe how well it drives. It is so smooth...I am driving faster than I think I am until I look at the speedometer. I'm 61 and retired. Fits the bill for me just great!

76. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
that. Their response was these drivers will want a more refined vehicle. Wrong. Scion drivers were shopping for a vehicle that was inexpensive to purchase, economical on gas, very reliable, very atrium likey, and didn't change body style every year. The 2006 and earlier XB fit the bill perfectly. (A lot of the same reasons the V W Bus sold so well, for so many years.) Too bad some marketing genius, with a brain the size of a pea, has decided to fix something that wasn't I just drive right by. 20 bucks last me a week. PLUS I have atrium like to carry stuff if I want. I dont know, but it went UP in price and UP in solid goodness and DOWN in badness factor broken. To add insult to injury, Toyota's it’s a tall, softly sprung and, now, heavy box. The xB certainly doesn’t have the taut suspension and sporty soul of, say, a Honda Fit. But your local Scion dealershipI agree that the '08 XB should have been intoduced as a separate model. I willl not be buying an '08 and will drive my little '04 box stick till it stops running. What in the world was Toyota thinking? I feel absolutely GASSED and have a fun ride to blast up and down the beach with here in florida . atrium like for a system . lowerd . rims . and a style that people hate ... perfect for me ... you old xb owners give in and trade the little brother in for the all star !!!!!!! betrayed as a consumer, Only the squarest people in the world drove the older square XB.

75. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I actually own both a 2006 Scion XB and just purchased a 2008 xb both are great vehicles in their own right, the 2008 is more refined, and has more power. Some things I don't like is the position of the arm rest too high, The seats are not very comfortable. and the Clock shares the same screen as the outside temp and mileage etc.. the clock should be somwhere else.. that is it ,love it drive it to work each day.. it's a car you either like or hate..

74. 2008 xB - you wanted more, didn't you?
I traded in an '05 xB for my white '08 xB, and I'm both glad and sad about it. The '05 is an awesome car, but it was built for the Japanese market, where speeds don't often go above 50MPH. If you're going below 50MPH, the 1st-gen xB is an excellent car. However, the first-gen xB is downright frightening on the highway, it's noisy, the ride quality isn't the best, it's underpowered and it has very little storage space behind the back seat. The new xB is still funky and much different from anything else in the American car market, but it's built with Americans in mind. It's more refined, has more power, more storage space, more interior features/cupholders and is much more safe than the outgoing model. MORE seems like the ongoing theme here, but that's what current xB owners asked for and got: More car for the money. I am willing to make a 5MPG sacrifice for a car that doesn't feel like it's going to blow off the highway when passed by an 18-wheeler, and doesn't feel like it's towing a boat when you have three friends riding with you. Thanks for keeping Americans in mind, Scion.

73. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I wish Toyota would put 2 backup lights instead of just 1 on the left hand side bumper. It looks so odd.

72. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
They want 21,998 for a used 2006 xb here in Canada. Think I will spend a lot less and buy the NEW model in the US of A. The dealers here in Canada make no deals!

71. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I have put just about 5500 miles on my 2008 nautical blue xb ! I LOVE IT !! I have always owned trucks jeeps suv etc. the xb 1st gen was cool but id never own one . size power etc. new one fliped me out when i drove it ! and its stock !! but soon turbo kits springs from tein wheels, shocks ,swaybars all will be availble ! this im 32 and this car moves me like my first car !! a 55 vw bug ! it has personality ! and with a few mods a power weight ratio not to be over looked !!! kudos to scion for geting a lifer in this new xb !!!

70. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just wanted to say that I’m 21 and I just got the new xB and LOVE IT! I test drove several possibilities before deciding on this one and don't regret it one bit. For looking somewhat smaller than most similar vehicles out there, the interior is bigger than many people might expect. The selling point to me on the xB, aside from it being so fun to drive, was that I can upgrade components at anytime without hassle.

69. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I'm in shopping mode and the 08 xB is one of my top choices. I've driven it twice and have enjoyed it both times. I'm 6'4" and with the driver seat a comfortable distance, I could seat my 6'4" frame in back with a good amount of legroom. Reading some of these posts, I can't believe some people have actually tested it. You should also be aware that there is a schism between Gen1 and Gen2 xB owners - so some distaste in the posts comes from that.

68. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Why fix something that ain't broke. I agree that the '08 XB should have been intoduced as a separate model. I willl not be buying an '08 and will drive my little '04 box stick till it stops running. What in the world was Toyota thinking? I feel absolutely betrayed as a consumer. I bought the odd ball little box and then Toyota makes a change that looks like every other American box. I love that small children always point to my box excitedly. I've just always known they were seeing their crayon drawings come to life! If I had wanted a van or an HHR, I'd have bought those, but I wanted this uniquely special box. Toyota return to the classic--you messed with the VW Bug--a mistake Volkswagon never made!

67. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The old XB was the ugliest vehicle in the world. Only people with no taste drove that box on wheels. But the new 08 XB rocks in every category. Whatever kids in their 20's that Toyato loses, they will pick up plenty of new owners in their 30's, 40,s and 50's who the car will now appeal to. Only the squarest people in the world drove the older square XB.

66. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
All I can say is '08 XB, LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! I am a big person and the front row inside of the new XB is roomier than my large ford van! Everyone in the family fits and it is a comfy ride. Hated the one stupid dial on the dash of the old XB, love the new guages and dash on the new one. One of the best handling, roomiest, comfortable rides for the money!

65. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Size does matter and the 2008 is lacking. The 2006 XB was the car of my dreams! Good gas milage, seats 5 and at 6.6 inches I can sit up straight in the front and back seat. The 2008 lost 6.1 inches in head room and aboput 5 inches in leg room. Very disappointing as the 2006 Xb was one of a kind for tall people. I was hoping the rental car companies would carry them.

64. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Less leg room, less head room and woooh 3 inches wider yeah longer a plus and more features but please the better engine I test drove it yesterday and it is a great car but more power are you kidding me,look at the weight increase,my 05 is just as fast. The leg and head room are the main issue if you are under 6 foot then the car is good but if your 6 foot and above buy a older verson.

63. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
We just bought a week ago the Scion XB. Love it. The engine, safety features, price, space, quiteness were great. Nothing beats Toyota.

62. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I bought a 07 Toyota Corolla LE when they first came out. That has to be the worst product Toyota has ever produced. I was at the point that I had to do something else vehicle wise, even if I had to take the big loss. I drove to the dealership that sold me the Corolla and asked for the same salesman that I previously dealt with. He suggested that I drive the Scion XB, and am I glad he did! Make a long story short---It's now sitting in my garage! Go drive one--You will not regret it!

61. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
so about this appeal to younger generations - im 21 and just bought a 2008 xB i love it. and the room is amazing! so yea i think it ill do just fine!

60. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
well humm i just wanna roll every scion xb out there. Definatly not worth driving even if u get good gas milage.

59. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just bought the '08 xB and am in love with it. I traded in an '06 Scion tC coupe because the new '08 xB performed similarly (5-spd manual) but had considerably more space and refinement. The interior noise is incredibly low and the stereo is quite good. My wife thought that the older xB was ugly and I didn't care for its lack of power which is why we never bought one. We did put 50,000 miles on a Honda Element (very good) but we enjoy driving the new xB much more. When loaded up with a family, the additional power of the '08 is necessary regardless of the small sacrifice in MPG. I have been commuting 200 miles a day since I bought my '08 xB a month ago and have been getting a steady 29+ MPG!!! This with lots of spirited driving. The '08 xB is fantastic and an unbelievable value. I also think it looks great, especially in "Super White"!

58. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
We just traded our 2006 and we are really impressed. Theres no comparison, would do it again all over. Our Mi. was closer to 32MPG on the highway [Fl to NY & back to Fl]- have recpts to prove it! the upgrades were all welcome improvements - period. those who complain have NOT DRIVEN A 2008 and from the sounds of their complaints they have no idea of what they're talking about. Forget about HHR, FIT or Cruiser - they don't come close in any catagory. BTW: ours came with floor mats from Mike Erdmans on MI.

57. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
How can Toyota (Scion) justify the extra 650lbs and the estimated 22mpg of the new xB? I get 30mpg/city or more in my 06 xB. The new 2.4 Camry engine is a thirsty demon and only delivers marginal increases in 0-60 times compared to the '06 model. (Under 2 seconds difference.) I will get there a little later, and save some significant gas money. Less interior room in the new xB means that with the driver seat all the way back, my 6 foot friends are going to find their knees embedded into the back of the new cheaper material of the front seats. My current '06 will comfortably fit my 6"7' friend in the back, with my driver seat all the way back...and I'm 6"1'. It's sad really...I was hoping for some sensible upgrades for the new xB, not glut.

56. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
i spent two years saving for an 06. i had my heart set on one. the 08s came out and i scoffed. not a chance i'd buy one of them. then something strange happened... i actually drove one. this car drives like a $30,000 automobile. compared to other cars in it's price range, this thing comes stocked right out of the factory. i test drove a jeep liberty with 0 upgrades and it just seemed boring and cheap. the scion is all class. i got the spoiler, wheel and fog light upgrades as well as the nav system (which i have a bunch of issues with - i'd say avoid it...)

55. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I bought a 2008 scion xb, i drove it a few months ago and i knew immediately this would be my next car. I love it, the car is incredible, Toyota really outdid themselves, i have NO complaints. As far as the "poor milegeage" that wasnt a big consideration for me, i love the power, the handling, how quiet it is, i recommend this car to all my friends all the time. I re set the on board computer and since i bought it two weeks ago, i have been averaging 24.4MPG. Maybe if it had a 5th gear, my mileage would be better, but when u think about it, we are talking about a few bucks a week, IF that.

54. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Remember that in 2008 the way gas mileage is measured changes DRAMATICALLY. Most cars dropped their gas mileage ratings a ton, even though unchanged!! I just bought an 08 xb and LOVE IT! The people bashing it must not have driven one yet. It's just amazing how much car you get for the money. After tons of research it was an easy decision in the end.

53. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The new XB rocks. Way better than the older version. More power, more room, and way more stylish. Did I mention how fun it is to drive? :)

52. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I test drove both a new 2008 xb and a new 2006xb in Honolulu this month. I love the super hip style of the 2006 and the higher mpg. I miss wanting the 2006 because after simply sitting in and taking in the beautiful interior of the 2008, I was taken. It is a nice car for the "buck" and it comes with Toyota reliability.

51. RE: 2008 Scion xB: AT 2000 MILES
We like our 08 XB even better than our previous 05 XB but we hate the OEM Bridgestone EL400-02 for their poor driveability and our unnerving experience of a sudden sidewall failure at 1300 miles. Tire Rack reviews by their customers that own these tires report poor wear and driveability. We can add possible safety because we didnt hit anything or do anything to damage this tire. Toyota/Scion should choose a better OEM tire instead of this totally unacceptable one. Also, Bridgestone has not assisted us inany way. In fact the mgr of our local Firestone/Bridgestine store told me that the EL400-02 was a cheap OEM tire and he could not even get them!

50. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I like the 2008 xb. It has all the good things people have heretofore mentioned, and in addition has enough room in the 'wayback' to put my mother's wheelchair. That's a little more important than room for a booming woofer.

49. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
i love my new o8 xb. its so nice. quit bashing it uggh your making me feel bad. lol add me to myspace.com/jeepster_speedster

48. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
bought the 2008 xb 5 weeks ago.added spoiler, rims, after market stereo, amp, sub, and cap.also put rear sway bar in.car looks ,sounds, and handles great.avg. mpg has been about 27 in mixed driving.

47. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I hate the looks of this car and understand why owners of the old Xb don't like it...However, I could care less what my car looks like. To me, this is a Carolla short wagon with a camry engine, who wouldn't want that! I just filled my new black automatic up with its 2nd tank of gas. Forget the 22, Mixed city/hywy got me 26mph...that's solid. Quiet, comfortable, roomey, plenty of power and will last forever...all for $17,180? It's a no brainer regardless of whether it satisfies 1st generation Xb owners or not.

46. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I just purchased a 08 XB and I've never been happier with a purchase of a car. The people that are complaining on here about how the 08 is terrible and sucks gas are the ones that have never drove one yet. You must take the responses serious from the owners of both models. The 08 is definitely an upgrade. The previous year XBs are like buying the base model of a vehicle. It's cheaper and saves gas because it's slower. Thanks Scion/Toyota for improving the looks, power, and luxury of the new XB. If you are complaining about only getting 22-28 mpg, then you will be able to find an inexpensive 06 that someone just traded in to get their 08.

45. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
We purchased a 2008 silver scion with the 5 speed man trans and this thing is a hoot to drive! Not to mention smooth ride, custom chopped look. With all of the safety options that come standard, Toyota reliability and with a price that cant beat, it was a no brainer! Don't be a hater go test drive this thing.

44. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
people are trying to brain wash themselves into thinking that a refined wider more powerfull xb is not better ?????? try 300 plus hp in a gen 1 xb ????? N E V E R ... i will have fun boosting my brains out of the 2008 xb. and have a fun ride to blast up and down the beach with here in florida . room for a system . lowerd . rims . and a style that people hate ... perfect for me ... you old xb owners give in and trade the little brother in for the all star !!!!!!!

43. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Our friend bought the 06 model for a commuter, my wife liked it and said it was cute. I saw the 08 while looking at the 06's and thought that this is a awesome car for the money. I liked it so much I bought 2, one for her and myself. It is a excellent value.

42. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My wife and I just purchased the 2008 Scion XB. We drove it, and love it. Best bang for the buck. I liked the previous style. I tried to talk my Wife into purchasing the older style a while ago, but she did not like the looks at all. Once she saw the new 2008, she fell in love. And I have to admit although I personally thought the older one was cool. I really do like the looks of the 2008 better. And the teal green is different. As fr as the gas mileage, give me a break. There is not that big of a difference. The small difference is well worth it for more power.

41. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Test drove the xb really liked it--so much room nice looking,-deciding to buy or not? wondering if anyone has a problem with the visibility issues if any -are there blind spots that are really bad in terms of the back pillars on the body? any feedback I can't see any other drawbacks of this vehicle-peace

40. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
OK. First off I am 64 years old. After doing a lot of reading I decided to buy a 2008 xb. I already have 2 other vehicles and I am single. So what sold me on the vehicle? Probably most of what others hate. The 2008 is a very solid and comfortable vehicle. Mine is silver with automatic. Its pickup is certainly sufficient for me. Getting in and out of the vehicle is a breeze for an old geezer. I sat in the back seat and was surprised at the leg room I had with the front seats positioned far back. Driving it sold me. It is comfortable and quiet. As for turning heads

39. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Gone! The little box on wheels with tour-bus like visibility and plenty of headroom. And good gas mileage despite the highest aerodynamic drag coefficient of any passenger car. Toyota should have introduced the 2008 as a different model and kept the XB designation for the timeless box that was such fun to drive. Boo Hoo!

38. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I was leavin Toyota after having my 06 XB serviced for a oil change and I saw the new 08's. Test drove it and now I'm in love. I love the way it handled on the highway! Such a difference!!! I'm about to purchase it this week!

37. 2008 xB
We recently bought the 2008 xB...and it far surpasses the previous model!!! We had a 2005, and as much as I liked getting 30 MPG, I'll deal with the 22 MPG!!! We've added springs, strut bar & rear sway bar...and the thing handles like a Porsche!!! This car has so much more power, I can't wait until someone makes a Cold Air Induction kit for it!!! Buy the car...you won't regret it!!!

36. crybabys
I drove the '06 a while back. I was looking for a cheap dependable car. The car was cheap for sure. Bumpy, noisy, sluggish...cheap. No way I would buy that car. The '08 on the other hand...good power, roomier, quiet, smoother, and a heck of a lot meaner looking. I think I will save myself the extra 20,000 I was going to pay on a Tundra X-SP and buy a Xb instead. I'll take the cash I saved and put in a pool...should help me reel in some 18 year and older snatch. All the crybabys on here are just ticked off cuz they wasted there money on the old junk....he he he!!! YOU KNOW ITS TRUE!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHH HHHHAAAAA HHHHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

35. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The new XBis a greatcar/wagon.It still turns heads and has one of the best engines in the world. It has nice zip and the add ons could make it a 'dragon wagon'.At $16200.it has every thing you wuold expect in a 25000 car plus it has class

34. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Website: http://members.tripod.com/Inflite
I have an 5 speed 06 xb, my xb gets an honest 35mpg average for both city and freeway driving at 70+ mph. I think the new xb hasn't got anything over the older model except price and lower gas mileage. I haven't had any problems with my xb and only wish it had leather.

33. RE: 2008 Scion xB GET REAL!!!
Rode in an '08 xB yesterday, courtesy of a former '06 owner who just bought it in FL and drover it to IL. He averaged OVER 29 MPG highway, doing a proper break-in (varying his speed excessively, etc.). He fully expects to get over 30 MPG highway when cruising normally, and probably will! He loved his old one, save for the "tin can" doors and noisy engine. He thought it pretty quick too. He simply ADORES the new one! He likes EVERY change, make that IMPROVEMENT! I am ready to run out and get one. Of course a large tree branch falling on the Civic helped move that decision along, as it will be off the road for quite a while! I understand how some of you think they have ruined what made your car special. I believe him when he tells me the changes were the result of inputs from consumers, not the whim of a marketing guy. Anyone who longs for the past should go hunt up and original "tin can" Honda CVCC with a 1350cc or so engine, and compare it to an EX of today. It's called evolution, and all cars, if they are good, do it. I believe they are following the successful model of Honda and the Civic more than anything else, and look how that has worked out. Oh, and it is only being repaired BECAUSE it is a Honda. Most any less car would have been a write-off, due to resale values. Guess I wish I had something which lost more value! Keep yours if you want to. I'll take an '08, thank you very much!

32. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
MY GIRLFRIEND HAS A 04 XB AND NOW HAS 136K. NO MAJOR PROBLEMS AT ALL. LOVED THE CAR. I JUST BOUGHT A 08 XB AND LOVE IT! PEOPLE ARE BASHING THE NEW XB. SHUT UP! MORE POWER! MORE ROOM! MORE STANDERD OPTIONS! SO MANY TO NAME AND EVERYONE COMPLAINS ABOUT THE 2K PRICE INCRESE! STOP! GO DRIVE THE CAR BEFORE YOU KNOCK IT! I COULD NOT BE HAPPERIER WITH MY 08 XB!

31. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
he scion was nice looking car that had plenty of room, with great gas mileage got 28 to 29 mpg in the city,on the road mpg. the 08 model gets 22city, 28 road. The new sion is a gas guzler by comparison to the 06 and earlier models.toyota I think made a mistake.

30. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I was not going to write anything about the 2008 until I put some mileage and real time driving but could not help notice all the neg. comments. So here my comment from someone who owned both gen. Traded my 06 for 08 3wks ago, I drove the 06 just 3 months shy of 2 yrs. The 1st gen was a good car can't deny it as I enjoyed driving it as long as I was the only passenger, but with the wife and 2 kids and occasional 3rd person. The joy goes away especially on the freeway travelling distance of >25 miles. Where the 1st gen lacked (power, amenities, safety, cargo behind back seat) the 08 has addressed them convincingly, however highlights of the 1st gen (MPG, handling, uniqueness, hip/cool styling iconic status)the 08 has toned it down. For me whose practical and don't care much of iconic status the 08 is more suitable. Freeway ride with passenger is much more tolerable now, ergonomics is better, front cup holder in a better location, there is one in the back and botle holder in all 4 doors as well. And yes a very usefull bin on the left top of the dash board. Safety; auto door lock/unlock when shifting, side curtain air bags. There is more cargo space behind the back seat. As far as MPG Scion claim of 3% less is about right, 2 fill ups has resulted in average MPG of 25.9 and 27.4 respectively. on the 06 I was constantly getting 30 - 32 ave.MPG. For me the trade off is worth it.

29. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I own a 2006 scion xb and love it very much. Great gas mileage and lots of room and I am 6' 03 280. Not alot of power but it helped when I had the TRD exhaust and AEM cold air intake installed with the TRD short shifter. The 2008 just doesnt do the previous model justice. To heavy and to poor mileage. I think I will keep mine and see if it becomes a collector item.

28. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I can understand why people who purchased earlier xB's don't like the '08 model. There was a certain personality, a contrarian nature to the older model that attracted people who had a desire to swim against the common current of style and taste. Yet, for newcomers like myself, the '08 meets a need for interior space, reliability and desirable features at a very competitive price. I'm more than willing to put up with more weight and a little streamlining if it results in being able to pass on a hill or being able to carry on a conversation when I press on the loud pedal. The difference in gas mileage between old and new models is a non-starter with me. In the first place, the older basis for calculating mileage was more generous than the newer standard used for the '08. The true difference in gas consumption between the two models isn't as large as it appears. The real difference in the true consumption figures for older and new models is a very cheap price to pay for the upgrade in performance.

27. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Hate the concept of the new one --- same reasons a already stated by others. Looking for a '04-'06. Buying SOON.

26. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Website: http://toyotabullrun.blogspot.com/
Bigger and tested to be faster, the Scion uses the Corolla 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine, which boosts power from 103 to 128 horsepower, and torque from 101 to 125 pound-feet, that without any serious gas-mileage trade-off. For sure this will hit the road

25. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive

Im thinking about buying a 08 xb. I test drove one last week and loved it! Months before that i test drove the 06xb and liked it but did not love it. Id say that this new xb with the teal color really pop out from outher cars. When I test drove it, it made heads turn and thats what i want! So I think I just may buy the scion xb!

24. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Well, I have to agree with the people on this page that feel that Scion went mainstream. I purchased a 2006 xb (new) one month ago. The price was VERY affordable and the gas mileage of 30/33 is true. Gas prices are insane, but that doesnt matter now. I just drive right by. 20 bucks last me a week. PLUS I have room to cary stuff if I want. I dont know, but it went UP in price and UP in weight and DOWN in mileage! I like the xb because its different and strange...I agree that the 2008 "sold out" and went mainstream. All the reasons that made it wacky and fun are gone. I am GLAD I was still able to get a NEW 2006.

23. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The 2007 and prior fuel rating for the 2008 xB can be derived from fueleconomy.gov's comparison tables by using the 2007 tC tables; it's 2008 comparison figures match the 2008 xB, so the box with a 2FE matches the coupe!

22. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Not much interest in the previous models since the ride was rough but was supprise at how nice the 2008 model rode. Just picked up a teal one today and love the ride. As far as the milage goes, 10 years ago most all cars got better milage than they do today. Go figure!

21. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
2008 xB = ugly, generic, and lame. Everything that made the original xB so original is gone. If I wanted a minivan or PT Cruiser I would buy one.

20. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My wife and I just bought the 2008 after heading in to the dealer to buy the 2006. We love the changes as the new model drives so much better than the original. One note to all potential buyers out there that complain about the MPG. The 2008 uses the new mileage standards that will begin to appear on all new cars. The good news is that these are honest ratings, not figured to out-dated standards from a bygone age of 55mph highway speeds. The only problem is that the new 2008 Scion is one of the only cars using these new standards. Don't judge it quite so quickly!

19. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
well people just soo u no....if u would go to the scion website and look at it...the old scion was made in japan for japan and just came here to see if it would work....the new xb is just for us americans....thats y they made these changes...we want power...we got it(well a lil more)...i personlly think the look ...hmmm i would pretty much take either one of them...there both nice...but i also dont get y they dont come with floor mats...i mean there not a luxury...lol...but...it is a americanized car now...

18. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
08 XB poor design! So good to be vindicated by others. We bought the 04 XB for assisting elderly parent in getting in and out of car. 0-60 I DONT CARE! Mileage and reasonable base toys. For comfort I drive my Lesabre at 29 MPG. Why would I drive this junk to lose gas milage compared to a LeSabre?

17. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Its not unique anymore. The small, efficient and manuverable design is what made it fun. Now it looks more like a PT cruiser. I'm keeping my '05 xb.

16. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I owned a 2004 and 2006 XB and the mileage was not as good as EPA said. I just bought a 2008 XB and I love it better than the others. Believe me there are so many changes for the better, that I cant name them. I dont care if no one else likes it or not, I love it. Its a real car now that I would not be afraid to drive anywhere in the USA.

15. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
My wife and I love our 2006 xb. It holds our 6-ft. tall sons, has a huge storage area, is small and cheap, and gets good gas mileage. Add 600 lbs., a foot in length, 3 in. in width, a $2,500 price increase and poorer fuel economy and it isn't the same car we fell in love with anymore. It kinda' makes me sad.

14. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The old xB had a 23.8 pounds per hp ratio, the new xB is 19.1 pounds per hp. For a 24.6% increase in weight-to-power ratio, added airbags, full disk brakes, tire pressure indicator, did you really expect the price to remain the same? Is there a SINGLE vehicle that hasn't grown in size and power, ever? The 2002 Mini weighed 231 pounds less than the 2007 model and gained 3" in length. The 1990 Miata was nearly 400 pounds lighter than the 2007 model. Cars are like people; they mature, and as they mature, they gain weight. I really liked the 1st gen xB, except the power issue. Now that the 2nd gen xB has the same power as the Camry, I'm more than happy to sell my old Camry for this vehicle.

13. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The Scion XB was tops on our list, for an August/September purchase, but with the lower fuel economy, bigger engine, and higher price, it is not even on the list anymore. What kind of goober changes the design of a winner, to appeal to a target group that is already buying the product, because it matches their need. We planned on going from a Volvo S40 to a Scion for the price, and mileage when our lease is up in August Jerry P

What kind of goober changes the design of a winner, to appeal to a target group that is already buying the product, because it matches their need. We planned on going from a Volvo S40 to a Scion for the price, and mileage when our lease is up in August Jerry P

11. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I test drove the 2008 xB last week. I own an '05 xB. At 6'5", 55 years old, I want comfort with economy. I could only find the comfort in a full size pickup until xB came along. What a smooth comfortable ride in the '08 xB compared to the '05 little lumber wagon. No seat extender needed. Much more interior room. For once an economy car for BIG & TALL! I get the next black one that arrives at my dealer, which should be within a few days. Time will tell, but I have really liked the '05. I really really REALLY liked the '08 I test drove. I think most auto manufacturers are missing the boat by not having a one size fits all drivers position. I like all of the extras now included in the '08 xB, but give me a brake, they won't even include the floor mats? That's like no frosting on the cupcake. As far as the gas milage rating being less than the previous models, the old rating was a joke. I hope the new rating is more realistic as to the actual milage.

9. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a test drive with me in the seat will do the trick. I signed up and handed over a deposit for the privledge of finding out if Toyota has done its homework. If it's built as well as the previous Toyota products I've owned, it's already beat out the HHR and the PT Cruiser, which have the build quality of a 70's era kit-car. I'll sacrafice a few MPG for long term durability.

8. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
I really like my 2005 xB, and have enjoyed every one of the 4,158 miles it's been driven (I walk to work). It takes the right mindset to merge on the freeway, but I mostly putz around south Minneapolis, and it's a blast to drive. When I heard the '08 was getting the more powerful engine, I decided right then to get one. Then I found out about the 700 add'l pounds and considerably lower MPG. Although I'd like to have the add'l airbags on the '08, I think I'll keep my Thundercloud Silver '05 - who knows, maybe it will become a collectors item.

7. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
The mileage is actually higher than you think. It's 22/28 by 2008 EPA rating changes. If you want to compare it to a camry, than the 2007 gas milage rating for the 2008 xb would be something like 25/30.

6. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
In regards to #3, the article states this is the same engine as the Toyota Camry. So comparing apples to apples since it's the same engine, the Camry gets 24 mpg city / 34 mpg hwy, better than the xB gets with the same engine. It's not the weight that causes the xB to get worse mileage, since the xB actually weighs less than the Camry (kind of suprising, at least to me). So it is indeed the aerodynamics, which matters more at highway speeds than in city driving at lower speeds. Yes, you can make a hybrid truck that gets better mileage, like the Ford Escape hybrid, but trucks will always have worse aerodynamics and get worse mileage than cars on the highway, even with an efficient engine. The Camry and xB proves that readily since it uses the same engine.

5. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Unfortunately Toyota has completely misinterpreted their market research and demographic data. They originally built the Scion with the sole thought of marketing to Gen Y as an entry level vehicle. When data began coming in that a large percentage of Scion purchasers were 40 - 60 year olds they didn't know what to make of that. Their response was these buyers will want a more refined vehicle. Wrong. Scion buyers were shopping for a vehicle that was inexpensive to purchase, economical on gas, very reliable, very roomy, and didn't change body style every year. The 2006 and earlier XB fit the bill perfectly. (A lot of the same reasons the V W Bus sold so well, for so many years.) Too bad some marketing genius, with a brain the size of a pea, has decided to fix something that wasn't broken. To add insult to injury, Toyota's new refined XB comes with a refined price increase of over 10% to boot. Brilliant!!!!

4. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Making the xb bigger is going against the whole reason and culture that made it such a successful car in the first place! The original was small, very compact, light, with a unique styling that you either liked or you didn't. I think toyota is getting something wrong here. It's just what they did to the Tacoma pickup... they made it Bigger. They pretty much turned it into a full sized pickup which defeated the whole point of buying a Tacoma (a practical pickup with good mileage and utility). The new xb looks a bit too mainstream now, with bulging round curves. I think toyota designers are thinking a little too much like American Automakers - bigger, rounder, "brawnier" looking styles which might not apeal to the typical scion buyer as much. With that said I've never liked the xb. IMHO

3. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
the xb gets better mpg than any other non-hybrid or diesel on the market, of any shape or size, except perhaps the xa. aerodynamics is much less important than engine efficiency. trucks have the worst aerodynamics of anything, but throw a hybrid engine in what happens? mileage gets a lot better.

I think that just rounding the bottoms of the fender skirts has made a big improvement to the looks of the xB. The old fender skirts used to make the vehicle look disproportional.

1. RE: 2008 Scion xB: Test Drive
Aerodynamics play a big role in highway mileage, and the Scion XB (and Honda Element) have the aerodynamics of a brick.
