What it is: Another sound system. Only this one has a 20-gig hard drive. You can download music libraries from a thumb drive or iPod; you can also rip and save store-bought CDs. Voice command and Bluetooth are part of the mix, but the implementation is less sophisticated and not as comprehensive as what drivers will find in the Sync.

Likes: The elegant interface saves you from scrolling through multiple menus to get to what you want.

Best trick: With the rear-seat entertainment package ($470) and Sirius satellite TV, passengers can receive streaming TV.

Dislikes: The touchscreen is a bit small, so it’s easy to push the wrong buttons. Also, it’s a crime that the streaming TV is an option, not standard.

Availability: 12 vehicles in 2008.

Pricing: $1700.

Almost everyone agrees that hybrid cars are the next big step on our way to an all-electric future. But what if we use two parallel powertrains, gas and electric, to drive a full size car? That way, we can offer the muscular V8 performance that buyers crave, yet still produce zero emissions around town.
