What it is: A small PC, running a rugged version of Microsoft Windows called Windows Auto. At launch, Sync will offer hands-free phone operation, hands-free text-messaging and a universal music player that pulls songs from almost any MP3 player or thumb drive via a built-in USB port.
Likes: The system is as flexible as a Romanian gymnast. Since its functionality is software based, adding capability simply entails downloading a file. Voice command is another sweet spot—the best we’ve tried.
best trick: Sync will receive text messages—and then read them to you.
Dislikes: The user interface is a bit cluttered, making for a slightly clumsy experience.
Availability: 12 vehicles by year’s end; all models within two years.
