Heavy-duty pickup trucks are becoming much more than merely the Clydesdales of the automotive world. Extreme torque, towing capacity and off-road capability are still the cornerstones of this breed. But now it all comes wrapped in stylish sheetmetal with refined handling and a near-luxury-car interior trim. The new Chevy Silverado HD is the best example yet of this new American workhorse. A 6.0-liter gasoline V8 comes standard with 353 hp and 373 lb.-ft. of torque. But we think most buyers will ante up $8000 for the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel option, which packs 365 hp and a gravity-altering 660 lb.-ft. of torque paired to an Allison six-speed automatic. That model can tow 16,700 pounds. For such a herculean truck, its ride is surprisingly smooth, as our recent test drive near San Diego proved.

the tow ratings are different by a few hundred pounds, big woop. get a truck that is good looking and u actualy dont feel uncomfortable in. 660 pounds of torque ROAR

i have an 08 crewcab hd with a duramax and only get 13.3 miles to a gallon of fuel had a 02 that got 22 what happend to my milage?

The tow ratings are different because none of the big 3 use the same measurement method. This is not yet standardized by law. I picked up an 08 2500 HD with the D/A combo and the LTZ/Z71 pkg. Its a great truck and it has a great warranty if needed. No Tundra is going to tow what this truck will thats produced today. As far as the 08's go, Fords mileage is worse and they raised the gearing to try to compete with Chevy recently to some odd ball ratio that Dodge and Chevy do not offer because they don't need to. I'm just saying if you need to haul a large load, you have 3 obvious choices and of those 3 I think the Chevy/GMC option is the leader.

i got a 2008 silverado with the 5.3 and 3.73 rear axle and locking rear differential. i love the tuck but the rear end will not unlock and is acting like a full posi unit. it only has 1700 miles on it. cant turn a corner without it chirping the dam tires. i love chevy but wat the hell???

i bought a 2008-1500 silerado. Ita a nice truck, But it has a very loud engine knock thats driving me crazy, the dealer says all 5.3 motor have it. and cant do anything about it. anyone eles have that problem. my truck has 600 miles on it.

Allison transmission? Would you be interested in knowing that my so-called "Allison" transmission went out at 13000 miles on a brand new truck. 4th gear is slipping. Took it back to the dealer where they completely overhauled the transmission. After I picked it up, the darn thing sounds like it is slipping again. Am I going to keep on driving Enterprise rental cars for the remainder or what? I think I am going to go Tundra. Forget the frame on the Tundra. I'll take one if it means that it is a more reliable truck.

im a chevy guy but chevy need to step up the towing power chevy has the lowest tow rating of ford and dodge come on chevy do something about that please very soon

Well, I just bought the silverado 3500hd, Ads in pm and the fuel economy that they said it would get. I have never been so disapointed in fuel economy. I traded in a f350 that was getting 14 mpg for this thing which is averaging about 11. My question is was it a strait cash payout for the article or was it in exchange for advertising dollars. PM has lost their credability with me and I am out 10,000 dollars because I will be trading this truck in on another ford. There vibration in the rearend they tell me is normal due to the large tires.(i guess only on chevy's as none of my fords do this with the same general tires) After 2 tips in three weeks to get the trailer brakes fixed I will now take it to an independent shop and pay for the repair as chevy cant figure it out. I doubt this article will be posted as I am sure your contracted with chevy prohibites negative ads. I will not renew your magazine for this reason 18.26 mpg my ***.

Better go take another look at the Ford tow numbers. Make that several thousand pounds difference when you consider the Ford Tow Boss option.

I've always been a big fan of Chevy trucks. I think they are to best truck made, but I looking to buy a new truck and need a 4x4 dually with a crew cab and found that the Chevy has the lowest tow rating, compared to Ford and Dodge. I'am very disappointed in that...
